162 Refugees Granted Citizenship Certificates Under CAA
Refugees from Pakistan and Afghanistan receive Indian citizenship in Haridwar

Haridwar: Under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) introduced by the Government of India led by Narendra Modi, minorities facing religious persecution in neighboring countries are being granted Indian citizenship. As part of this initiative, a total of 162 refugees from Pakistan and Afghanistan were handed citizenship certificates in Haridwar.
Officials stated that with the grant of citizenship, these refugees will now be able to live a dignified life in India while protecting their religion, culture, and social rights. Those who received citizenship include members of the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, and Parsi communities, many of whom had faced religious discrimination and persecution in their home countries.
The event held in Haridwar was attended by central and state officials, who also explained the process of granting citizenship certificates to the refugees. The program is being seen as a reflection of the government’s policies aimed at ensuring minority protection and equality.
This initiative under the CAA highlights India’s commitment to providing a safe refuge for people facing religious persecution. After receiving citizenship certificates, the refugees will now be able to settle permanently in India, pursue education, find employment, and maintain their cultural identity.
Officials said the program marks an important step toward fulfilling the government’s commitment to human rights and the protection of minorities. They also added that the process of granting citizenship to eligible refugees will continue in the future.
