Among all Ekadashi observances, Dev Uthani Ekadashi is considered extremely significant.
As the name suggests, ‘Dev Uthani’ means ‘Waking up of God’. True to its name, this is the auspicious time when Lord Vishnu wakes up from his four-month-long sleep. It is called Chaturmas. On this day, Hindus all over India start celebrating events like weddings and housewarming ceremonies, which were paused during the four-month period of Chaturmas.

At the same time, Vaishnav people will keep Ekadashi fast on November 02.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi In 2025:Significance Of The Marriage Of Shaligram And Tulsi
According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Tulsi (Vrinda) was the wife of an asura (demon) named Shankhachuda. Although Shankhachuda was unrighteous, his wife was chaste, which made him very powerful and invincible to the gods. Lord Vishnu took on the form of Shankhachuda and touched Tulsi, causing her chastity to be broken.
As soon as Lord Vishnu did this, Shankhachuda’s power diminished, and Lord Shiva subsequently killed him. When Tulsi discovered what had happened, she became extremely angry and cursed Lord Vishnu, turning him into a stone (Shaligram).
Lord Vishnu accepted the curse and declared that he would reside on Earth in the form of the Shaligram stone. He also assured Tulsi that she would accompany him as a sacred plant, providing him shade. Devotees would gain spiritual merit by symbolically marrying Tulsi to Shaligram. This marriage takes place on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi. To this day, the Tulsi plant grows near the Gandaki River in Nepal, where Shaligram stones are also found.
