Cyclone Montha Threatens Eastern Coast of India with Heavy Rainfall

Impact of Cyclone Montha
The impending cyclone ‘Montha’ is expected to significantly affect India’s eastern coastline, particularly due to its formation in the Bay of Bengal.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning indicating that the cyclone could make landfall near Kakinada, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, on the evening or night of October 28.
Current Status of the Cyclone
A low-pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal is advancing rapidly. According to the IMD, this system is anticipated to develop into a ‘deep depression’ by October 26 and transform into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 27. It is likely to continue moving northwest and may intensify into a severe cyclonic storm before reaching the coast.
Location of the Cyclone
As of 11:30 PM on October 25, the cyclone was located approximately 550 kilometers west of Port Blair and 850 kilometers east-southeast of Chennai.
Areas at Risk from Cyclone Montha
The cyclone is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds to states along the eastern coast. From October 27 to 28, significant rainfall is likely in parts of Andhra Pradesh, particularly in Yanam and Rayalaseema. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the entire state on October 26.
On October 28 and 29, Odisha may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, affecting districts such as Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Wind speeds could reach up to 60-70 km/h, with some areas experiencing gusts of up to 80 km/h.
Today (October 26), moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts. Light to moderate rain may spread to Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet. Heavy rainfall is anticipated on October 27 in Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Vellore, with Chennai also likely to see significant rain.
Precautions for Residents
Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant, seek safe locations, and adhere to official warnings. The cyclone poses a risk of coastal flooding and damage from high winds.
