‘Kashi-Tamil Sangam’ Strengthens ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ Spirit: PM Modi’s Message on Pongal
Celebrating Cultural Unity, Language, and Shared Heritage Across India

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that initiatives like the Kashi-Tamil Sangam deepen India’s cultural unity and strengthen the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’. Sharing his thoughts on the occasion of Pongal, the Prime Minister reflected on his recent Somnath pilgrimage, the achievements of the Kashi-Tamil Sangam, and India’s rich shared cultural heritage.
In a blog post, PM Modi recalled attending the Somnath Swabhiman Festival, commemorating the 1,000th anniversary of the first attack on Somnath in 1026 CE. Citizens from across the country participated, expressing respect for India’s history, culture, and enduring spirit.
During the event, the Prime Minister met participants who had previously joined the Saurashtra-Tamil and Kashi-Tamil Sangams, whose appreciation inspired him to share his reflections.
PM Modi referred to his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program, noting his lifelong regret at not being able to learn Tamil. Over the years, the government has found opportunities to promote Tamil culture nationwide and foster national unity, with the Kashi-Tamil Sangam serving as a prime example. In Indian tradition, a ‘Sangam’ signifies a confluence or meeting point, and the Kashi-Tamil Sangam honors the living unity of India’s diverse traditions.
He noted that Kashi is the perfect location for such a Sangam, being a historical center of knowledge, prosperity, and spiritual pursuit. Kashi and Tamil culture share deep ties: Baba Vishwanath resides in Kashi, while Rameshwaram represents Tamil Nadu; Tenkasi is often called ‘Southern Kashi’. Saints like Kumaraguru Swamigal created lasting bridges between Kashi and Tamil Nadu, and poet Subramania Bharati gained intellectual and spiritual growth in Kashi, refining his nationalism and literary brilliance.
The first Kashi-Tamil Sangam took place in 2022, which PM Modi inaugurated. Scholars, artisans, students, farmers, writers, and professionals from Tamil Nadu visited Kashi, Prayagraj, and Ayodhya. The fourth edition, held on 2 December 2025, focused on ‘Tamil Karkalam: Learn Tamil’, giving people in Kashi and surrounding regions a unique opportunity to learn the language. Tamil teachers participated, creating a memorable experience for students.
Several special activities marked this edition:
-
Ancient Tamil text Tolkappiyam translated into four Indian and six foreign languages.
-
Sage Agastya Vehicle Expedition from Tenkasi to Kashi, including eye check-up camps, health awareness drives, and digital literacy programs.
-
Tributes to Pandya ruler Adi Veerakram Pandiyan.
-
Exhibitions at Namo Ghat, academic sessions at BHU, and cultural performances.
PM Modi highlighted the participation of thousands of youth, reflecting their desire to connect with their roots. Indian Railways facilitated special trains for the journey, creating an atmosphere of music and dialogue. He praised the warmth of the people of Kashi and Uttar Pradesh and the efficiency of local administration.
The concluding ceremony was held in Rameshwaram, attended by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, who delivered an inspiring address on national unity. PM Modi stated that the Kashi-Tamil Sangam has strengthened cultural understanding, academic exchange, and public engagement. He concluded by extending greetings for Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, Pongal, and Magh Bihu, calling for a stronger national unity.
