One Rupee Salary Again! Gokul Butail Refuses Pay and TA-DA for 2026–27, Sets Rare Example of Public Service

CM’s Principal Advisor Chooses Token Honorarium Amid State’s Financial Strain

Dharamshala: In a remarkable gesture of simplicity and public commitment, Gokul Butail, Principal Advisor (Innovation and Digital Technology) to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, has once again decided to draw only a token salary of ₹1 for the financial year 2026–27.

According to an official communication issued by the Principal Advisor’s office to the General Administration Department, Butail has not only declined a regular salary but has also refused to accept any government benefits, including TA/DA (Travel Allowance and Daily Allowance).

No Financial Burden on State Exchequer

Continuing his stance from previous years, Butail has made it clear that he wishes to contribute to the state’s development without placing any financial burden on the government treasury. The clarification came after the Personnel Department sought confirmation regarding his honorarium status for the upcoming financial year.

Currently working closely with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Butail plays a key role in strengthening innovation and digital governance initiatives across the state.

A Message During Financial Crisis

At a time when the Himachal government is navigating financial challenges, his decision is being widely discussed in administrative circles as a significant example of voluntary public service. Many see it as a strong symbolic move reflecting transparency and austerity in governance.

Public discourse on Thursday also revolved around whether other political leaders might consider adopting similar measures. Some citizens suggested that reducing additional perks—such as large security details, vehicle convoys, and attached staff—could further ease the burden on the state’s revenue.

In a political climate often dominated by debates over perks and privileges, Butail’s decision to work for a symbolic ₹1 once again stands out as an uncommon and striking gesture.
