Bangladesh Set for New Government Swearing-In; PM Modi Likely to Be Invited
BNP Signals ‘Reset’ in India Ties as Tarique Rahman Prepares to Take Oath

New Delhi/Dhaka: After securing a sweeping majority in Bangladesh’s February 2026 general elections, Tarique Rahman is poised to be sworn in as the country’s next Prime Minister. In what is being described as a significant political shift, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has indicated its intention to give relations with India a “reset.”
According to sources, the party is preparing to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
Call for a Fresh Start in Bilateral Ties
Speaking to PTI, Tarique Rahman’s foreign affairs adviser Humayun Kabir emphasized that the moment presents an opportunity for both nations to reassess longstanding perceptions. He stated that India must recognize the political changes in Bangladesh, adding that the era of Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League has ended.
The BNP has also urged India not to provide shelter to Sheikh Hasina, whom it accused of attempting to destabilize Bangladesh. Kabir suggested that under India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, mutual respect and cooperation could open new avenues of development for both countries.
Modi Congratulates Rahman
Soon after the election results were announced, on February 13, 2026, Prime Minister Modi reportedly held a telephonic conversation with Tarique Rahman, congratulating him on the decisive victory. The discussion was described as cordial, with Modi reiterating India’s support for a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh.
PM Modi also extended an invitation to Rahman to visit India at his convenience, signaling a willingness to strengthen bilateral engagement under the new leadership.
As Bangladesh prepares for the formal swearing-in ceremony, regional observers are closely watching whether this political transition will indeed mark a new chapter in India-Bangladesh relations.
