T20 World Cup: ‘Not Every Ball Needs to Be a Six,’ Shivam Dube Recalls MS Dhoni’s Advice

Ahmedabad: All-rounder Shivam Dube played a match-winning knock of 66 runs against the Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium, helping India secure a 17-run victory. During his explosive innings, Dube smashed six sixes.
In recent times, Dube has emerged as a key pillar of India’s middle order in the T20 format. While he is known for his big-hitting ability, he has also strengthened his game by rotating the strike effectively during challenging phases. Dube credited former Indian captain MS Dhoni for bringing clarity to his batting approach.
Speaking on JioHotstar after the match, Dube said that early in his career he struggled against fast bowlers. However, Dhoni’s advice on strike rotation and game awareness transformed his mindset and helped him perform better under pressure.
“When I first came into the IPL, I struggled against fast bowlers and couldn’t hit them well. I realized that if I want to dominate at this level and use my power effectively, I need to work on it. I trained hard during the off-season. Mahi bhai told me that it’s not necessary to hit a six every time. Boundaries and strike rotation are equally important,” Dube said.
He added, “His advice has really helped me. If I get a good ball, I try to hit a boundary or rotate the strike. In the death overs, I naturally accelerate, but at the start of an innings, my focus is on smart intent.”
Talking about handling pressure situations, Dube said, “I don’t feel pressure. I focus on the match situation. If wickets fall, my responsibility is to bat deep. If I stay till the end, I know I can add the required 10–15 runs in the final over. I avoid unnecessary risks in the middle overs. If the situation demands patience, I rotate the strike. If the platform is set, I’m ready to attack from the first ball.”
