Kerala to Be Officially Renamed ‘Keralam’, Union Cabinet Approves Proposal

New Delhi: The state of Kerala will now be officially known as “Keralam” after the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal to change the state’s name.

The decision was taken during the first Union Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday at the new PMO building, Seva Teerth. The move comes ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala, scheduled for April–May.

Earlier, on June 24, 2024, the Kerala Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to officially change the state’s name from Kerala to “Keralam.” The resolution requested that the name reflecting the state’s identity in the Malayalam language be adopted in the Constitution and official records.

With the Cabinet’s approval, the process for formally implementing the name change will now move forward as per constitutional procedures.
