MG Enters SUV Segment in India: Wuling Starlight 560 to Challenge Tata and Mahindra

New Delhi: JSW-MG Motor is preparing multiple launches in 2026, marking its entry into India’s SUV segment. The company plans to bring petrol, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles to the market. Among these, the Wuling Starlight 560 has been patented for India and spotted undergoing testing, signaling MG’s imminent entry. Both MG and Wuling brands are owned by China’s SAIC Motor.
Exterior and Interior
The Starlight 560 measures 4745 mm in length, 1850 mm in width, and 1750 mm in height, with a 2810 mm wheelbase. The SUV features full LED lighting, roof rails, skid plates, 18-inch dual-tone alloys, and split tail lamps. Inside, it offers a two-spoke steering wheel, 3.5-inch instrument display, and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity. The cabin comes with leather upholstery, and the India-spec model may feature minor adaptations.
Engine and Power Options
The SUV comes with multiple powertrain options:
-
1.5L Turbo Petrol: 174 BHP, paired with manual (260 Nm torque) or CVT (290 Nm torque).
-
Plug-in Hybrid: 1.5L engine delivering 194 BHP and 230 Nm torque.
-
Electric Version: 134 BHP with 200 Nm torque.
The Starlight 560 will directly compete with the Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV7xx, with its market positioning largely depending on the chosen powertrain. Industry analysts expect the launch to focus on plug-in hybrid and all-electric variants, offering Indian consumers more sustainable SUV options in the mid-size segment.
This move marks MG’s push to establish itself in India’s growing SUV market, bringing international design and technology to rival established domestic players.
