Veteran Actor Deb Mukherjee Passes Away At 83

Veteran actor Deb Mukherjee, father of renowned filmmaker Ayan Mukerji and uncle of actress Kajol, passed away at the age of 83. He had been battling health issues for some time and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai.
A close relative of Deb Mukherjee informed ABP News over the phone that he passed away in his sleep at his Mumbai residence at around 7:30 AM this morning.
Who Was Deb Mukherjee?
Deb Mukherjee was part of the illustrious Mukherjee family, known for its deep-rooted connections in the Indian film industry. He was the younger brother of actor Joy Mukherjee and filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, who was married to veteran actress Tanuja. This made Deb Mukherjee the uncle of Bollywood star Kajol and actress Tanishaa Mukerji. His son, Ayan Mukerji, is a well-known director famous for films like Wake Up Sid, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and Brahmāstra.
Deb Mukherjee appeared in several films during the 1960s and 1970s. While he may not have achieved widespread stardom, he was recognised for his work in films like Ek Bar Mooskura Do (1972), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), and Lal Patthar (1971). Despite limited box office success, he remained a respected figure in the industry.

Apart from his contributions to cinema, Deb Mukherjee played a significant role in Mumbai’s cultural landscape. He was one of the key organizers of the North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja Pandal, one of the grandest Durga Puja celebrations in the city. The festival, which sees participation from Bollywood’s biggest stars, has been a long-standing tradition of the Mukherjee family.
Final Rites
Deb Mukherjee’s last rites will be performed today at 4:00 PM at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai.
