A New Chapter in a Tradition Since 1912: Melania Trump Donates Her 2025 Inaugural Gown to Museum
Historic Dress Joins Smithsonian’s Renowned First Ladies Collection

Washington: US First Lady Melania Trump has donated the gown she wore at the 2025 presidential inauguration to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. She stated that “America’s fashion industry can lead the world,” adding that “human emotion is woven into every stitch.”
The gown will now become part of the museum’s historic “First Ladies Collection.” Established in 1912, the collection features inaugural gowns worn by US First Ladies and remains one of the most visited exhibitions at the Smithsonian.
Melania described the dress as more than just an outfit. “This is not just a dress. It is the result of more than 50 years of education, experience, and understanding reflected in every thread and every stitch,” she said.
The off-white silk crepe strapless gown was designed by Harvey Pierre and adorned with black silk gazar detailing. It was paired with a replica of a diamond brooch originally created in 1955 by Harry Winston, set on a black ribbon choker.
Melania Trump said the design was dedicated to American craftsmanship. She emphasized that creating such an intricate garment requires exceptional teamwork from pattern makers, tailors, and skilled artisans. “This is proof of why America’s fashion industry can lead globally,” she remarked.
Expressing her passion for design, she added, “I love the entire process of design, from beginning to end. It takes time, it is slow, but the result is always magical.” She also encouraged pride not only in cherished traditions but in bold self-expression that reflects individuality to the world.
Melania Trump is the first First Lady to donate her inaugural gown for a second time. She is also the second First Lady in history to have two inaugural gowns included in the collection. Before her, that distinction was held by Ida McKinley, whose gowns from 1897 and 1901 are preserved in the exhibit.
