All you need to know about Tata Sierra: The nostalgic SUV returns next month

Tata Motors is gearing up for one of its most anticipated launches of the year, thecomeback of the Tata Sierra. Once a symbol of Tata’s SUV legacy in the 1990s, the Sierra is set to return in a modern avatar this November 2025, marking the revival of an Indian automotive icon.

The company will likely introduce the internal combustion engine (ICE) variants first, followed by the electric (EV) version a few weeks later.

Exterior design

The Sierra blends retro charm and modern ammenities.
First previewed in a near-production form at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 back in January, the new Tata Sierra stays true to the spirit of the original while evolving into a contemporary SUV. The design retains its signature boxy silhouette, tall bonnet, and squared-off wheel arches, elements that once made it instantly recognisable on Indian roads. Recent test mules spotted in Pune reveal a production-ready stance with a tall, upright profile, clean surfaces, and a commanding road presence.

Just like the old Sierra, the new iteration also features a big rear glasshouse.
At the front, the Sierra sports split LED headlamps, a full-width LED daytime running light bar, a gloss-black grille, and a silver skid plate, all combining to give the SUV a tough yet premium look. The rear design pays homage to the original Sierra’s upright stance with modern features like connected LED tail lamps, a flat tailgate, and a rear wiper, while new-age touches like flush door handles, chunky body cladding, and a strong shoulder line enhance its modern appeal.

Interior design

Inside, Tata Motors is taking a bold leap in cabin design and technology. The new Sierra willintroduce a triple-screen setup, a first for any Tata vehicle. The layout merges a digital driver’s display, a large central infotainment touchscreen, and a dedicated screen for the front passenger, all integrated under a single glass panel for a sleek and futuristic appearance. The central console will likely feature touch-based controls, a minimalist gear selector area, and generous use of soft-touch materials and metallic accents. Adding to the premium feel is a flat-bottom steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, a design cue that’s quickly becoming a Tata signature.

Beyond its aesthetics, the Sierra’s cabin will be packed with technology, including connected car features, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and wireless smartphone connectivity.

Powertrain options

Under the hood, the ICE-powered Sierra will offer two engine options: a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and the familiar 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine shared with the Harrier and Safari, producing 168bhp and 350Nm of torque. Both engines are expected to be available with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic (torque converter) transmissions. While the electric Sierra to feature an all-wheel-drive (AWD) layout with dual motors, just like the Harrier EV. It remains to be seen if Tata will extend the AWD option to the ICE versions as well.

The Sierra EV, expected to arrive shortly after the ICE launch, will be based on Tata’s advanced Acti.EV architecture, which also underpins the upcoming Harrier EV. It
will likely offer multiple battery pack options, delivering an estimated range of over 500km on a single charge. The dual-motor setup promises enhanced traction and off-road capability, making the Sierra EV a versatile choice for both urban and adventure-driven buyers.

Carrying forward its iconic tagline – “It takes the rough with the smooth” – the reborn Sierra aims to blend nostalgia with modern-day performance and comfort. It encapsulates the toughness of the original SUV while adding the refinement, safety, and technology expected from a 2025 model. Positioned above the Harrier and Safari in Tata’s lineup, the Sierra is designed to appeal to both traditional SUV buyers who value ruggedness and the new generation of EV enthusiasts seeking cutting-edge innovation.

With its bold design, powerful engines, long-range electric variant, and futuristic interior, the 2025 Tata Sierra stands as one of the most exciting automotive comebacks in recent years.
