Bangladesh violence: ISKCON to organise prayers worldwide over attacks on Hindus

Amid ongoing tensions in Bangladesh, the followers of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) across the globe have decided to unite on Sunday, to “pray and chant” for the safety and security of minorities in India’s neighbouring country.

Taking to X, ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharaman Das wrote, “In over 150 countries and countless cities and towns, millions of ISKCON devotees worldwide will come together this Sunday, 1st December, to pray and chant for the safety and security of Bangladeshi minorities. Please join your local ISKCON temple or congregation.”

ISKCON’S response in response to tensions in Bangladesh

The society made this appeal in response to protests in Bangladesh over the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh earlier this week in a sedition case. Das was denied bail in the case later. The widescale protests, largely by Hindus, were held across the country. On October 30, the authorities in Bangladesh filed sedition case against 19 individuals, They were accused of disrespecting national flag of Bangladesh during a rally in Chittogong .

On Friday, three Hindu temples were vandalised by a mob in Chittogong. The incident took place around 2:30 pm in theHarish Chandra Munsef Lane in the city,where Shantaneshwari Matri Temple, Shoni Temple, and the Shantaneshwari Kalibari Temple were targeted, a report published in news website BDNews24.com reported. While India had expressed concerns over the developments on Tuesday, on Friday too, it asked the interim government in Bangladesh to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities.

Nine held for murder of lawyer

Meanwhile, at least nine persons have been arrested in Bangladesh in connection with the murder of a lawyer who was killed during violence. All of them were held after after a case was filed against 46 persons, for their alleged role in the murder of Saiful Islam, during clashes on Tuesday between security personnel and followers of Hindu community leader Chinmoy Krishna Das after he was denied bail and sent to jail by a Chittogong court.
