Bengal Weather Alert: IMD Forecasts Rain Likely In Kolkata, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong; Cyclone ‘Shakti’ Likely to Develop May 23-28

Bengal Weather Alert: Residents in South Bengal are expected to experience continued discomfort as the heat wave conditions persist despite chances of rain and thunderstorms.
The Alipore Meteorological Office has stated that while thunderstorms and scattered showers are likely to continue in the region, they will bring only short-term relief from the prevailing heat.
Bengal Weather Alert: Kolkata Weather Forecast
On Wednesday, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy across the region. Kolkata, in particular, is likely to see humid and uncomfortable weather, with the maximum and minimum temperatures hovering around 37 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunder and lightning in the city in the coming days, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. A ‘yellow’ alert has been issued for Kolkata to advise residents to remain cautious.

Heat wave conditions are expected to continue in districts like West Burdwan, West Midnapore and Birbhum until Thursday. All of South Bengal, including Kolkata, will remain hot and humid. However, scattered thunderstorms with lightning are likely to occur in several districts, including both 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, Burdwan, Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia and Bankura.
According to the IMD, thunderstorm activity and light rainfall may begin on Wednesday afternoon in parts of South Bengal. Gusty winds could also accompany the rain. The rainfall intensity is expected to increase from Thursday onwards, with chances of thunderstorms in North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Purulia, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia until Saturday. Wind speeds during these storms may reach 30 to 40 kmph.
Bengal Weather Alert: Kalbaisakhi Alert
Additionally, a Kalbaisakhi alert has been issued for Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Burdwan, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bankura on Thursday and Friday. These areas may experience strong winds ranging from 60 to 70 kmph, along with thunder and hail.

In North Bengal, although the weather remains hot and humid in Malda and nearby areas, there is no heat wave warning. However, very heavy rain-up to 200 mm-is expected in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri. Heavy rainfall is also likely in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Thunderstorms are predicted across all North Bengal districts till Saturday, especially in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri. Light to moderate showers are likely in Malda and both Dinajpur districts.
Bengal Weather Alert: Cyclone Shakti
Meanwhile, reports suggest that a cyclone named “Shakti” may form over the Bay of Bengal between May 23 and May 28. Though the IMD has not officially confirmed it, the department has said that such systems could bring heavy rainfall in several parts of the country.
