According to a report by the Times of India, a fake NRI and his associates tricked the woman into trafficking a whopping amount of Rs 5.6 Lakh under the pretext of customs clearance.

In her complaint to East CEN Crime police on April 24, the victim, a resident of Indiranagar, stated that she was cheated by a man who claimed to be from Karnataka but with Canadian citizenship.

She received interest from a profile named Jayanendra Kumar, who claimed to be a Karnatak-origin NRI after making a profile on a matrimonial website. He claimed to be working as a senior officer in a reputed company and earning well. He proposed to her to marry him. The guy used the foreign number to talk to her after their relationship evolved, and the conversation shifted to WhatsApp.

One day, the man claimed to be travelling to meet the woman and also sent a photo of the flight tickets. He further said that he was bringing expensive gifts and cash for her.

The man contacted her on April 17, claiming to have landed in Delhi and was detained by customs for carrying undeclared valuables. He requested urgent financial assistance from the lady to avoid legal trouble. Later, she received a call from a woman claiming to be a customs official, warning her that the man could face jail time if customs duties and penalties weren’t paid immediately.

Believing the story, the woman transferred ₹5.6 lakh in several instalments between April 17 and 20 to the bank accounts provided by the duo. As soon as she paid the money, both individuals became unreachable; only then did she realise that she had been duped and filed a complaint with the police.

A case was registered under the Information Technology Act and BNS Section 318 (cheating), the report added.

Bengaluru News:  “People should understand no one gets costly gifts and a huge amount of dollars or pounds when they claim they are coming to India. People should be careful about such frauds, the report added, quoting a senior official.
