Best fix for missing teeth: Dental implants vs dentures, key differences between the two
Tooth loss impacts chewing, speech, and sometimes even confidence. Tooth replacement options like dental implants and dentures offer both benefits and challenges. While implants are durable and functional, dentures are affordable and non-invasive. But which one is right for you?
Implants require healthy gums and sufficient bone density, making them better suited for younger patients or those seeking stability and a permanent, natural look. Dentures, however, are a viable choice for those prioritising affordability and non-invasive treatment, says Dr Suman Yadav, Director of Maxillofacial & Dental, Numed Hospital, Noida.
Dental implants, says Dr Yadav, have revolutionised tooth replacement. “They mimic natural teeth, both in appearance and functionality. Dental implants offer durability, often lasting decades with proper care, making them a worthwhile, long-term investment. They also promote jawbone health by stimulating the bone and preventing the resorption commonly associated with missing teeth. Functionally, implants restore chewing efficiency, allowing patients to eat comfortably as if they had natural teeth,” he says.
Aesthetically, the expert says, each crown is customised to match your teeth, ensuring a natural look. “Maintenance is simple, requiring daily brushing and flossing, much like caring for real teeth. However, there are challenges to consider. Implant placement involves a surgical procedure that requires healing time. The upfront cost is higher than other options, although their longevity makes them cost-effective in the long run,” Dr Yadav says.
Additionally, implants require sufficient jawbone density, and some patients may need bone grafting before placement. “Studies show implants have a 95 percent success rate even after 10 years. They also significantly improve chewing ability and patient satisfaction compared to dentures,” he says.
Dentures, on the other hand, are a removable and cost-effective option for replacing multiple or all missing teeth. “They’re ideal for patients seeking a quick and affordable solution,” says Dr Yadav. Being budget-friendly, dentures are significantly cheaper than implants, and their non-invasive nature reduces the need for surgery, allowing for quicker recovery with less risk. “Temporary dentures can even provide immediate results after extractions. However, they come with limitations. Without jawbone stimulation, bone resorption occurs over time, compromising facial structure,” he says.
Dr Yadav, however, warns that dentures may also slip or feel uncomfortable while eating or speaking. “Frequent maintenance is required, with replacements needed every 5-7 years, and their aesthetic appeal diminishes with wear. Before choosing between implants and dentures, consider factors like oral health, age, budget, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.”
