Bihar Election Results: PM Modi’s ‘Hanuman’ Chirag Paswan Delivers Big for NDA – Is Deputy CM Post Next?

Bihar Election Results 2025: Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP-Ram Vilas), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Janata Dal (United)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), is heading towards its best-ever performance in the Bihar Assembly polls, leading on 20 of the 28 seats it contested as per EC trends.

Under Chirag Paswan – who steered the party through turbulent waters after his uncle Pashupati Nath Paras attempted a takeover in 2020 – the LJP(RV), founded by his father and former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, bargained hard for a larger share of seats within the NDA this time.

And it seems that the NDA’s trust in Chirag Paswan, a staunch supporter of PM Modi and calls himself as his (Prime Minister’s) ‘Hanuman’ has only grown, with the party proving its mettle and adding significantly to the alliance’s overall tally.

On several occasions, including during the election campaign, Chirag Paswan-seeking to demonstrate his loyalty to Prime Minister Modi as an NDA ally-described himself as “Modi’s Hanuman.” He had even declared earlier, “Mere PM mere dil mein baste hain… chahe toh main dil cheer ke dikha dunga” (“My Prime Minister lives in my heart… if needed, I will tear it open to show you”).

As counting continues, the LJP(RV) has maintained an impressive conversion rate of 69 per cent, leading on 20 seats. If these trends hold, Chirag’s outfit may outperform the Lalu Prasad Yadav’s younger son led Tejashwi Yadav-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and decisively outshine Congress, which are currently ahead on 24 and 2 seats respectively.

And if the trends are indeed converted into results, will the Lok Janshakti Party demand for the Deputy Chief Minister’s post or significant ministries to further strengthen its say in the alliance?

Seats where LJP(RV) is leading as per EC trends are:

  • Sugauli
  • Govindganj
  • Belsand
  • Bahadurganj
  • Kasba
  • Balrampur
  • Simri Bakhtiarpur
  • Bochahan
  • Darauli
  • Mahua
  • Parbatta
  • Nathnagar
  • Brahampur
  • Fatuha
  • Dehri
  • Obra
  • Sherghati
  • Bodh Gaya
  • Rajauli
  • Gobindpur

Meanwhile, projections indicate a commanding lead for the NDA, signalling what could be one of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s most decisive electoral victories. The renewed JD(U)-BJP partnership, bolstered by PM Modi’s nationwide popularity, appears to be steering the alliance towards a historic mandate.

NDA vs Mahagathbandhan | Seat Tally (EC data, 3:30 PM):

NDA | 208 seats

BJP: 95
JD(U): 84
LJP(RV): 20
HAM: 5
RLM: 4

Mahagathbandhan | 28 seats

  • RJD: 24
  • Congress: 2
  • CPI (M): 1
  • CPI (ML-L): 1

Additionally, BSP is leading on one seat, while AIMIM is ahead on six.

For Nitish Kumar, who has governed Bihar for nearly two decades, this election was widely seen as a test of political endurance and public trust. Once hailed as “Sushashan Babu” for pulling the state out of the shadows of the so-called “jungle raj,” the Chief Minister had in recent years faced signs of voter fatigue and criticism over shifting political alignments. Yet, current projections suggest a renewed wave of support, with voters once again backing his governance model.

How LJP Performed in 2020

In the 2020 Bihar elections, the united Lok Janshakti Party contested over 130 seats but won only one – Matihani. That MLA later switched to JD(U). Notably, LJP candidates had finished second in nine constituencies.

How LJP Cut Into JD(U)’s Vote in 2020

Chirag Paswan’s campaign against Nitish Kumar split JD(U)’s vote share, reducing its tally from 71 seats in 2015 to 43 in 2020. The LJP had quit the NDA over seat-sharing disagreements and contested independently on around 135-143 seats.

This time, however, the return of a confident, coordinated BJP-JD(U) alliance has reshaped the battlefield. With Prime Minister Modi standing firmly beside Nitish Kumar, the coalition projected a united front, emphasising welfare delivery, infrastructure expansion, social schemes, and administrative stability.

The blend of Modi’s national appeal and Nitish’s grassroots presence has created a formidable electoral force, now poised to translate momentum into a landslide victory. As Bihar reaches the verdict stage, the Modi-Nitish partnership has emerged as the defining factor of the 2025 assembly election.
