Eid ul-Fitr feast ideas: Binge on traditional Eid dishes and desserts to celebrate the festival

After a month of fasting and praying during Ramadan, Eid is a time to come together with friends and family to celebrate, indulge in rich delicacies, and partake in the festivities.

The joy of Eid is deeply intertwined with the food, which reflects India’s diverse culinary heritage, spanning generations and regions.

Feast for foodies:

Whether indulging in time-honoured dishes or experimenting with healthier alternatives, the essence of Eid remains unchanged – a joyous occasion of togetherness. Eid celebrations across India reflect the country’s regional diversity in food. Shiv Pravesh, Executive Chef at Novotel Hyderabad Convention Centre & HICC, highlights the luxurious delicacies associated with Eid. “Eid celebrations include a royal feast filled with rich and aromatic delicacies. Hyderabadi Biryani, Haleem, Mutton Sikhampuri, smoky kebabs, Mutton Galouti, and Taar Korma are essential to the feast. Slow-cooked dishes like Nalli Nihari, Mutton Nihari with Khamiri Roti, Kukur Mirchi Korma, and Rampuri Khichda are also popular.”

For those with a sweet tooth, Eid desserts are a highlight. Chef Pravesh adds, “Classics like Sheer Khurma, Baklava, and Kanafeh are must-haves. Given the rise of health-conscious dining, we also offer nutritious options like Stuffed Dates, Date Energy Balls, and Anjeer Shahi Tukda with Almond Milk. To be health conscious, go for grilled meats over fried options and dishes like Haleem Ke Kebab, Vegan Keema Samosa with Yogurt Dip. A wholesome Quinoa Salad with roasted vegetables can also be an excellent addition to the feast.”

A healthier take on Eid classics:

Delhi-based Naushy Mirza, a culinary expert who curates menus inspired by family traditions and street food from Lucknow and Old Delhi, highlights the meticulous preparation that goes into Eid feasts. She explains, “Food preparations for Eid begin in advance, and the meals that follow are often a feast of flavor and tradition. These dishes are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Indian cuisine, with regional variations adding unique twists to the Eid menu.”

While traditional Eid delicacies are known for their indulgence, modern adaptations allow for a healthier balance. Naushy Mirza suggests mindful adjustments, stating, “One can make these staples healthier by baking or air frying instead of deep frying, or using less oil when shallow frying. Substituting refined flour with whole grain ingredients, using natural sweeteners like date syrup, honey, or jaggery instead of refined sugar, and switching to healthier oils like avocado or olive oil can make a significant difference.”

She also advises using toned milk instead of full cream milk and incorporating salads and fruits into the spread. “Adding a fresh salad balances out the richness of the meal, providing a refreshing contrast to deep, spiced flavors. Portion control is key to enjoying Eid delicacies while maintaining a healthier approach to food. At the end of the day it’s important to enjoy the occasion while still being mindful of our health.”

Create festive ambience for Eid parties:

Beyond food, Eid is also about setting the right ambiance for celebration. Preparations often begin weeks in advance with cleaning and decorating homes to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Small creative touches can elevate a simple gathering into an elegant Eid celebration. Naushy recommends a Dastarkhwan experience transforms the meal into something extraordinary. She says, “Set up a traditional floor seating arrangement with comfortable rugs, vibrant cushions, and bolsters. Personalise the setting with Eid Mubarak cards placed on each cushion or plate. Incense sticks add a pleasant fragrance, while large flower arrangements of mogra and gulab enhance the traditional vibe.
