Fatty Liver, Heart Disease, and Stroke Could Soon Be Treated With Just a “Capsule”

Indore: If you’re struggling with fatty liver, heart disease, or stroke, this news could be a game-changer. The Gastroenterology Department of a super-specialty hospital affiliated with MGM Medical College recently hosted a three-day GI Conclave, where liver and endoscopy specialists from across India discussed the latest research and advanced treatment techniques in gastroenterology.
Experts revealed that by 2040, complex endoscopy procedures performed today could be done with a simple capsule. This capsule will not only examine the digestive system but also help in detecting and treating serious conditions like fatty liver, heart disease, and stroke.
Growing Need for Liver Transplants
Rising alcohol consumption and related liver diseases were highlighted as major concerns. Specialists warned that without timely treatment, patients might eventually require liver transplants. During the conclave, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Shiv Sarin launched his book On Your Body, while endoscopy expert Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy received recognition for his contributions. Senior Indore-based physician Dr. Demo Sunil Jain was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Live Demonstrations Explained EUS Anatomy
Dr. Amit Agrawal, organizing secretary, explained that the workshop covered 16 complex cases using Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). These included:
-
Gallbladder cancer
-
Pancreatic cancer
-
Pancreatic pseudocyst drainage with plastic and metallic stents
-
Gastric varices treatment using glue and coil
Live demos showed EUS anatomy, biopsy procedures, and stent placement techniques.
Discussions on Fluid Retention in the Abdomen
The conference also addressed alcoholic liver disease, metabolic alcoholic liver disease (Met-ALD), fatty liver, and ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen). Experts noted that most liver conditions are caused by alcohol, fatty liver, and poor dietary habits. Distinguished doctors from across India, including Dr. Adarsh Chaudhary (Delhi), Dr. Amit Mahadev (Delhi), Dr. Anil Arora (Mumbai), and Dr. Pramod Garg (Hyderabad), were honored during the conclave.
