Govt Of India Makes These BIG Changes In Passport Rules

The Government of India has announced several changes in passport regulations. For those born on or after October 1, 2023, only birth certificates will be accepted as proof of date of birth.

This change is part of an amendment to the Passport Rules of 1980 and will be effective once published in the official gazette.

Officials have clarified that this rule mandates birth certificates issued by authorised bodies as the sole document for verifying the date of birth for eligible applicants. The registrar of births and deaths, municipal corporations, or other authorities under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, are responsible for issuing these certificates.

Documents for Applicants Born Before October 2023

For individuals born before October 1, 2023, the new rule does not apply. These applicants can use various documents to prove their date of birth. Acceptable documents include a birth certificate, school leaving certificate, PAN card, driver’s licence, or a service record copy.

Privacy Measures in Passport Details

The updated rules also address privacy concerns by omitting residential addresses from the last page of passports. Immigration officials will access this information through a barcode scan instead. This measure aims to protect personal information from being publicly displayed.

Colour-Coded Passports

A colour-coding system has been introduced for different categories of passport holders. Diplomats will receive red passports, government officials white ones, while all others will have blue passports. This system helps in easily identifying the holder’s category.

Changes in Parental Information Display

The new rules also remove parents’ names from the last page of passports. This change benefits children from single-parent or estranged families by preventing unnecessary disclosure of family details.

These updates reflect ongoing efforts to streamline passport processes while addressing privacy and inclusivity concerns. The changes aim to simplify documentation requirements and ensure sensitive information is handled with care.
