India’s Got Latent Row: Parliamentary Panel Writes To I&B Ministry Seeking Overhaul Of Media Laws By Feb 17

A parliamentary committee led by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has written to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, seeking a response by February 17 on measures required to regulate media platforms.
The move follows a widespread backlash against social media influencer Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks on the YouTube show India’s Got Latent, which many found vulgar and offensive.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology is specifically requesting details on possible amendments to existing laws that would help curb the spread of obscene and vulgar content across media platforms, including Over-the-Top (OTT) services. The demand for reform comes amid growing concerns over the lack of regulation on digital content, which has gained immense influence over young audiences.

Earlier, multiple members of the parliamentary panel raised concerns about Allahbadia’s comments and urged the government to introduce stricter regulations to prevent such incidents from recurring. The controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent has reignited debates on the ethical responsibilities of content creators and the need for a clear legal framework governing digital media.
Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi Demands Action Against Ranveer Allahbadia
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, a member of the Standing Committee on IT, was one of the first to call for action against Allahbadia’s remarks. She took to social media to express her concerns, emphasising that platforms with significant youth engagement must adhere to ethical standards.
“I will be raising the issue regarding the show called India’s Got Latent as a member of the standing committee of IT & Communication for the kind of vulgar, blasphemous content that is passed off as comedy. We need to set boundaries since these platforms influence young minds and they are passing off absolute rubbish as content. The language used by Ranveer Allahbadia, which was also actively encouraged by others on that ‘comedy panel,’ is unacceptable,” Chaturvedi posted on X.
YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia’s remark in a recent episode of India’s Got Latent sparked backlash, leading to a formal complaint against him, influencer Apoorva Makhija, Raina, and the organisers of the show. Allahbadia issued a public apology, calling his comments “inappropriate” and a “lapse in judgment”.
