Kangana Ranaut criticizes the selection criteria for Indian films at the Oscars: “Has to make the country look like a…”
With the 97th Academy Awards fast approaching, Kangana Ranaut recently shared her candid views on the selection of films for Oscars during the promotional events for her upcoming film Emergency. Her remarks sparked conversations about the criteria and preferences that shape the prestigious awards.
In an interview with Times Now, Kangana Ranaut expressed her views on the types of films that often gain recognition at the Academy Awards. She stated that movies portraying India in a negative light tend to be favored. Referring to Slumdog Millionaire, she remarked that films depicting India as a “shithole” are more likely to advance at the Oscars.
“Usually, the agenda they push for India is very different. Joh Oscar pick karta hai is anti-India. Abhi bhi joh film praise garner kar rahi hai, I was very excited about it. I heard the director say in India, you don’t have the freedom to love the way you want to love because of religious intolerance. I haven’t even seen the film. For Oscar, it has to be a film that makes the country look bad. Slumdog Millionaire etc. It always has to be a film that has to make the country look like a shithole.”
Kangana also emphasized that Emergency is not designed to cater to Western perceptions of India’s past struggles but instead showcases the country’s strength and resilience today. She asserted her indifference toward both Indian and international awards, acknowledging the film’s high-quality craftsmanship comparable to global cinema. However, Kangana also touched upon the influence of geopolitics in award recognitions, expressing limited expectations for fair acknowledgment as someone with nationalist views.
Emergency, a biographical action-drama directed by and starring Kangana Ranaut, is slated for a theatrical release on January 17. The film boasts an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Satish Kaushik, in key roles.ISRO Has Major Missions Ahead, Says Newly Appointed Chief V Narayanan
