This decision follows persistent requests from the boatmen and productive discussions between the Prayagraj District Boatmen Association and the Mela administration, as stated by Additional District Magistrate Mahakumbh Vivek Chaturvedi.

Pappu Lal Nishad, President of the Prayagraj District Boatmen Association, expressed his support for this fare adjustment. He noted that despite inflation, boat fares had remained stagnant for years. He commended the administration’s decision as a positive step towards improving the welfare of boatmen.

Safety Measures and Regulations

To prevent overcharging, strict measures will be implemented following the fare hike. A revised list of boat fares is being prepared to ensure transparency. This list will be prominently displayed at all ghats and parking areas, according to ADM Mela.Maha Kumbh Mela

For devotees’ safety, vehicle movement has been restricted by the administration. Traditional boats are allowed to operate even on major bathing festival days, while motorboats remain prohibited. Sub Divisional Magistrate Mahakumbh Abhinav Pathak mentioned that decisions regarding boat operations during festivals will depend on weather and crowd conditions.

Preparations for Maha Kumbh 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 is set to occur from January 13 to February 26 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. This event is one of the world’s largest spiritual gatherings and is expected to draw around 45 crore visitors from India and abroad. Held every twelve years, it is a monumental event rooted in Hindu mythology.

Currently, there are 1,455 boats operating at Sangam. However, this number is anticipated to rise above 4,000 during Mahakumbh as boats from neighbouring districts join in. All boats will undergo safety inspections before receiving licenses, and life jackets will be provided to boatmen. Additionally, each boatman will receive insurance coverage worth ₹2 lakh.
