Mahakumbh 2025: Why Devotees Are Rushing To Sangam Nose, Near Stampede Spot, For Holy Dip
The area where the stampede occurred at the Mahakumbh on Wednesday morning is near the popular ‘Sangam Nose’ in Prayagraj, which has emerged as the favourite spot for the holy dip among the devotees.Devotees attending the Mahakumbh want to take the Amrit Snan at the ‘Sangam Nose’, which is considered as the most auspicious place. Most of the VIPs coming to the Kumbh have also taken a dip at the Sangam Nose.
Since the devotees thronging the Sangam Nose for Amrit Snan are in millions, the capacity of the area has been significantly increased this time allowing over 9 lakh devotees to bathe every hour. The Sangam Nose area was expanded by 2 hectares. But the rush of the lakhs of devotees on Mauni Amawsya (January 29) at the Sangam Nose has clearly proved that the crowd is too much to handle.
It was here when the pilgrims heading for a snan during ‘brahm-mahurat’ in the wee hours of Wednesday that the stampede took place. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has urged people to not come to the Sangam Nose, saying the entire area along the Ganga ghats is ‘Kumbh area’ and auspicious, and people should take a dip at the Ghat nearest to them.
Mahakumbh 2025:UP Government Was Aware Of Sangam Nose Rush
Just two days ago, an Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) was activated by the state authorities to monitor crowd density and ensure that no excessive gathering takes place at Sangam Nose. Officials were also instructed last week to ensure devotees return from the same sector or zone in which they arrive and under no circumstances would devotees be permitted to move to Sangam Nose or other zones.
Instructions were issued to minimise movement between zones, particularly at Sangam Nose from January 27-29. But all this proved to be inadequate on Wednesday.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the deaths and those seriously injured in the stampede.
Mahakumbh 2025:Huge Rush At Mahakumbh
CM Yogi Adityanath said nearly 8-10 crore people were at the Mahakumbh on Wednesday and over 3 crore people had taken the holy dip till noon on Wednesday. Nearly 20 crore people have taken the holy dip at Mahakumbh since January 13.
Stressing that several ghats have been specially prepared to ensure a safe and convenient bathing experience for the pilgrims, the CM has now appealed to devotees to avoid overcrowding at Sangam Nose. A 12-km-long ghat has been constructed for easy access and bathing. Devotees are being encouraged to bathe at the ghat closest to their entry point and return from there without moving to other zones.
