Mahakumbh Basant Panchami Amrit Snan: UP Authorities Tighten Arrangements, Medical Teams, Police On Alert
The Uttar Pradesh government has heightened medical readiness in Prayagraj for the Basant Panchami ‘Amrit Snan’ at Mahakumbh.Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has urged medical staff to be vigilant, especially after a stampede on January 29 at Sangam, which led to 30 fatalities and 60 injuries due to overcrowding.
Medical Infrastructure Preparedness
In anticipation of the large number of pilgrims, over 1,200 medical personnel are stationed in Mahakumbh Nagar. A detailed emergency plan is in place, including a special four-member medical team that has inspected all hospitals within the fairground. They have ensured that medicine stocks and equipment are adequately maintained.
Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital and Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital in Prayagraj are on high alert. They have prepared extensively with 500 staff members on standby, 150 beds reserved for emergencies, and 60 resident doctors available around the clock. The facilities boast 30 CT scan machines, MRI, ultrasound equipment, and a 200-unit blood bank linked to an alarm system for rapid response.
Emergency Response System
Dr. Gaurav Dubey, nodal officer for medical services at the Mahakumbh fair, emphasized the importance of the government’s emergency response system. This includes ambulance services. The Chief Minister has mandated that no medical personnel leave their post until February 5. Over 1,200 doctors and paramedical staff are deployed for the event. Additional teams are ready as backup, with sector hospitals undergoing regular inspections for medicine and equipment availability.
The healthcare infrastructure includes a central hospital with 100 beds, two sub-central hospitals with 25 beds each, eight sector hospitals with 20 beds each, two infectious disease hospitals with 20 beds each, and ten first aid posts. These efforts aim to ensure the safety and health of devotees.
Transport Arrangements
To manage the massive influx of devotees efficiently, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport (UPSRTC) has arranged a dedicated fleet of shuttle and reserved buses. By February 2 evening, around 35 crore people had taken a dip in Triveni. UPSRTC has reserved 2,500 buses and 550 shuttle buses to facilitate a smooth return of devotees while preventing overcrowding.
