Makar Sankranti Turns into a Day of Death: Five Killed in Horrific Head-On Collision

Devotees Heading for Sacred Narmada Bath Meet a Tragic Fate Near Bairasia

Bhopal: What began as a sacred journey on the holy occasion of Makar Sankranti ended in unimaginable tragedy. Devotees who left home with the wish of taking a holy dip in the Narmada became victims of a fatal road accident near Bairasia. A high-speed loading pickup collided head-on with a tractor-trolley near Vidya Vihar School, killing five people on the spot.

The impact of the collision was so severe that the pickup vehicle overturned on the road. Besides the five fatalities, nine people were critically injured and are battling for their lives. All the injured were immediately rushed to the district hospital for treatment.

All the deceased and injured are residents of Sironj in Vidisha district. Among the dead are members of the same family, including a father, his son, and a grandmother. They were traveling in the pickup vehicle to Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram) to perform the traditional Narmada bath on Makar Sankranti.

Following the accident, the scene turned chaotic with screams and cries echoing across the road. Bodies lay scattered, and bloodstains were visible all around. With the help of local passersby, police teams worked tirelessly to pull the injured out of the mangled vehicle. Upon receiving information, the SDM and Bairasia police reached both the hospital and the accident site.

Bairasia Police Station in-charge Virendra Singh Sen said that overspeeding was the primary cause of the accident. The collision was so intense that both vehicles were completely shattered.

Meanwhile, the accident led to a long traffic jam on the Bhopal–Bairasia road. Police later cleared the congestion using a crane and restored traffic movement.

This tragic incident cast a dark shadow over the festive spirit of Makar Sankranti, turning a day of faith and devotion into one of mourning and sorrow.
