Muharram Procession Violence:In an unsettling incident, five policemen got injured in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Sunday after participants in a Muharram procession tried to take a ceremonial horse through a prohibited route, an official said.
The police have filed FIR against 16 persons in the matter
Some of the participants clashed with the police, which prompted the police to resort to a cane charge to bring the situation under control near Khajurwadi Masjid under Jiwajiganj police station limits, the officials added.

The officials said that a route was already finalised and the organizers of the procession were instructed accordingly. Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said, “The route had been finalised in advance and organisers of the procession were clearly instructed not to take horses through prohibited paths. Despite this, those in the procession tried to force their way after getting the horse to ram into the barricades.”
Speaking about the action taken, the SP said, “We had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the crowd. They fled leaving the horse behind,.”
Jiwajiganj Station House Officer Vivek Kanodia said that five cops: Assistant Sub Inspector Khuman Singh Kelwa, Head Constables Mukesh Munia, Anil Sisodia, Chandrapal, and Constable Shyam Singh were injured and received first aid at the district hospital.
“The horse used to topple the barricade belongs to one Irfan alias Lalla from Begum Bagh. Sixteen persons, including the organise, were booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing public servants from discharging their duty,” Kanodia said.

In a separate incident, in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh, tensions flared in Jattari town, about 40 km from Aligarh, on Sunday morning following reports that unidentified persons desecrated the tomb of a revered Sufi saint located at a graveyard in the town’s main market area.
After the news of the incident spread, a crowd began to gather near the shrine of Hafiz Allah Mehar Shah, prompting senior police officials to rush to the scene and calm the situation.
Authorities assured action and the repair of the damaged site. The authorities also said that CCTV cameras would be installed. The incident coincides with the observance of Muharram.
