The first medicine we take as soon as we have a headache or fever is paracetamol. It is considered cheap, easily available and effective, but do you know that it can have a dangerous effect on your health? A new study has revealed that paracetamol not only reduces pain but also affects our brain, due to which we start taking more risks.
According to Professor Baldwin Way, a neuroscientist at Ohio State University, people who take paracetamol have an increased tendency to take risks. That is, they are not afraid of doing things that people usually do after thinking carefully.
How was this research done?
In this study, more than 500 people who took 1000 mg paracetamol were given the task of blowing up a balloon on a computer screen. Every time they blew up the balloon, they got fake money, but if the balloon burst, they lost all their earnings. The results of this research clearly showed that people who had taken paracetamol were willing to take more risks. That is, they kept blowing up the balloon more without fear and they were less afraid of losing their earnings. This indicates that after taking paracetamol, the feeling of fear and anxiety in the mind decreases, due to which people start taking careless decisions.
Other dangerous side effects of paracetamol
* Liver damage: Excessive use of paracetamol can damage the liver, leading to jaundice, liver failure and, in severe cases, death.
* Effects on kidneys: Long-term use of this medicine can cause kidney failure.
* Effects on blood cells: It can reduce the number of blood cells in the body, leading to weakness and a weakened immune system.
* Allergies and skin reactions: Some people may develop rashes, itching and skin allergies.
* Breathing problems: In rare cases, paracetamol can cause difficulty in breathing and a bad effect on the lungs.
How to use paracetamol safely?
* Always take medicine as per doctor’s advice.
* Follow the correct dosage, do not consume in large quantities.
* If symptoms do not subside within 3-4 days, consult a doctor.
* If you already have liver or kidney disease, avoid taking paracetamol.
