Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said a tea seller in the pantry car of the Pushpak Express started a rumour about a fire on the train, which was then spread by two passengers, causing panic among travellers and prompting some to jump off the train.

Tragically, they were struck by the Karnataka Express in Jalgaon district, north Maharashtra, on Wednesday.Speaking to reporters in Pune, Pawar stated that the duo was travelling from Lucknow to Mumbai on the Pushpak Express.

As per a Times of India report, the two passengers accused of spreading the rumour, Udal Kumar and his brother-in-law Vijay Kumar, both from Uttar Pradesh’s Shravasti district, were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Pushpak train: Meanwhile, the death toll in the accident has reached 13.

“Udal Kumar and Vijay Kumar were travelling in a general coach of the Pushpak Express. They were sitting on the upper berth when a tea seller of the pantry car started to shout about a fire on the train. The two men spread the rumour in the coach, after which panic spread among passengers, and some of them started to jump off the moving train,” Pawar said.

He further said that one of the passengers pulled the stop chain to halt the train. After the train stopped, more passengers got off, and that was when some of them came under the Bengaluru-New Delhi Karnataka Express, which was coming from the other side on an adjacent track.

According to the deputy CM, out of the 13 deceased, the identity of 10 has been ascertained, while three bodies, which include two women and one man, are yet to be identified.

Pushpak train:  Ten passengers have sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment.

The government will bear the cost of their treatment, said Pawar, adding that Udal Kumar and Vijay Kumar have also sustained injuries.The accident occurred between Maheji and Pardhade stations near Pachora town in north Maharashtra around 4:45 pm on Tuesday.

An eyewitness, Babadeep Shobharam Paswan, according to an India Today report, recounted the chaos, saying, “A tea seller started the rumour by claiming the train had caught fire. He himself pulled the emergency chain, and as the train slowed down, passengers began jumping out in a desperate attempt to save their lives.”

He further said, “Some people jumped directly onto the track where the Bangalore Express was passing and tragically lost their lives as they were crushed.” He noted that dozens of other passengers who jumped in the opposite direction were saved because there was no track there, adding, “If they had jumped on the track side, the death toll would have been even higher.”
