Renault-Nissan Prepare to Launch New SUVs, Maruti May Face Increased Competition

The mid-size SUV segment has become one of the most competitive in the Indian market, with nearly 13 models currently available. Tata Motors recently launched the Sierra, while Maruti Suzuki introduced its second offering in this segment, the Victoris. Now, Renault and Nissan are targeting the mid-size SUV segment, planning to launch two new products in 2026.

Next-Generation Duster
Renault has confirmed that the new-generation Duster will debut in India on January 26. While details are still limited, the SUV is expected to closely resemble the international-spec model in design, with a few country-specific modifications. The third-generation Duster will be based on the CMF-B platform, measuring approximately 4,360 mm in length with a 2,673 mm wheelbase. Although the Duster’s popularity in India has largely been due to its diesel engine, the upcoming model will rely entirely on a petrol engine.

Mild-Hybrid Petrol Engine
The international model features a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine, but the Indian variant will likely come with a 1.3-litre HR13 turbo petrol engine, producing 154 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. It will be paired with a 6-speed manual and CVT automatic gearbox. Renault is also considering a strong hybrid powertrain for India, which could be introduced later.

Nissan’s New Mid-Size SUV
Nissan will also launch a new mid-size SUV in India. Named the Tecton, this SUV will be based on the Renault Duster and utilize the CMF-B platform. It is expected to launch in the first half of 2026. The Japanese automaker has revealed a glimpse of the Tecton’s exterior design, showing inspiration from its flagship petrol SUV.

Similar Features in Both SUVs
The Renault Duster and Nissan Tecton will share many similarities, although their top trims will differ. Media reports suggest that both SUVs will feature a similar kit, with minor differences across variants.

The Nissan SUV will share the Duster’s powertrain—a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine generating 154 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. Renault and Nissan are betting on the popularity of mid-size SUVs in India, which is expected to grow in the coming years. Currently, around 13 models are available in this segment.
