SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch May Not Get Extension As Govt Invites Applications For Post
Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chief Madhabi Puri Buch is unlikely to get an extension in her post as the government invited applications on Monday for the post of SEBI chairman.
The Finance Ministry has sought the applications a month ahead of Buch’s tenure ending on February 28, 2025. The applications have been sought by February 17, signaling the government’s intent to have a new person as the SEBI chief when Buch’s three-year-tenure ends next month. Buch’s immediate predecessors, Ajay Tyagi and UK Sinha, had both got extensions as the SEBI chief, with Tyagi serving for four years and Sinha serving for six years in the chair.SEBI Chief
Short-seller Hindenburg Research had last year levelled allegations against Buch, which she had dismissed. However, multiple government sources had subsequently said that Buch won’t be given an extension though she will be allowed to complete her term till February 2025. Buch is the first woman to lead SEBI, and the first person from the private sector to be appointed to this position. She was a whole-time member of SEBI for five years from 2017 to 2022.SEBI Chief
Hindenburg Research recently announced that it had shut down its operations, ahead of Donald Trump taking over as the US President.
