Tamil Nadu Weather: Erode Hits 40°C; Chennai, North TN Brace For Hottest Days Ahead

Chennai is likely to hit 40°C this weekend as a severe summer spell grips Tamil Nadu, according to weather bloggers. The Chennai Rains blog reports that this marks the second active heatwave phase of Summer 2025, with afternoon temperatures expected to remain 2-4°C above normal.

Several areas in North Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, could touch 40°C before Sunday.

Heatwave Intensifies Across Tamil Nadu

On Thursday, Erode has become the third IMD observatory this year to record 40°C, following Vellore (40.6°C) and Madurai. Trichy, Cuddalore, and Karaikal have also registered their hottest days of 2025 so far. Meanwhile, Trichy AP, Cuddalore and Karaikal record the hottest day of the year, the blogger added.

Another blogger Tamil Nadu Weatherman aka R.Pradeep John says, “Dry Hot winds from NW from Rayalseema/ Interior Karnataka would be pushed into North TN reach Vellore, Ranipet, Kanceepuram, West Interior Chennai and Tiruvallur districts. Temp to spike next 4-5 days. Particularly – Friday and Saturday will be very hot days. Chennai Meenabakkam can record its first 40 C of the year. Vellore 41+ C chances are very high.”

As per Regional Meterological Centre, the maximum temperatures were generally near normal at most places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area on Wednesday.

“They were above normal by 2-3°C at isolated places over rest Tamil Nadu. They were in the range 35-39°C over the plains of North Interior Tamilnadu; 35-36°C over the plains of South Interior Tamilnadu; 33-36°C over Coastal Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal areas and 21-29°C over hilly areas.”

Meanwhile, part of Tamil Nadu received rain on Wednesday. Bhoothapandy (dist Kanyakumari) and Mannargudi (dist Thiruvarur) received 2 cms each.
