Tesla’s Retail In India Remains Slow, Only 48 Model Y SUVs Sold In Nov’25

Tesla, the Elon Musk led electric vehicle manufacturer, entered the Indian market in 2025 with the launch of the Model Y in the country.
Since its launch, the electric car has received a rather cold response from the market, with slow sales. The US-based brand has registered sales of 157 units in the country since the deliveries began in September 2025, as per a report by IANS. Based on the Vahan portal’s data in November, the brand delivered 48 cars, lagging behind established rivals.
According to the Vahan data, other luxury car makers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz zoomed past Tesla with sales of 267 and 69 EVs in November, respectively. Tesla’s Model Y, each priced close to Rs 58.59 lakh (ex-showroom), places the brand within competitive reach of established European luxury automakers in India.
This mirrors the circumstances the brand encountered in September 2025. Based on Vahan data, in September 2025, rival luxury car manufacturers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz surpassed Tesla with sales of 307 and 95 units, respectively. Additionally, Volvo reported sales of 22 units of its electric vehicles. In this scenario, Tesla was restricted to approximately 60 units before the month concluded.
The brand secured just over 600 bookings by mid-September, as per media reports. A BBC report suggests that only a fraction of these orders transitioned into sales, as deliveries commenced in September, while competing premium models showed strong sales, supported by festive demand and tax incentives.
Despite the gradual increase in sales, Tesla is still expanding its presence in India. Recently, the company opened its inaugural all-in-one Tesla Centre in Gurugram. Located at Orchid Business Park in Sector 48, the new facility is designed to integrate retail, after-sales service, deliveries, and charging infrastructure, providing customers with a comprehensive ownership experience.
The Tesla Model Y available in India comes in two variants: Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, offering ranges of 500 km and 622 km (WLTP), respectively. The Model Y starts at a base price of 59.89 lakh. Currently, Tesla has begun deliveries of the RWD variant, while the Long Range trim’s delivery is pending.
