Tripura Student Murder Wasn’t Racially Motivated; Police Say One Accused Belongs To Northeast

Uttarakhand News: The Uttarakhand Police have arrested five people in connection with the death of Anjel Chakma, a student from Tripura , who died after an alleged assault in Dehradun . Police have said that their investigation so far does not support claims that the attack was racially motivated.
Police Form Special Team
Briefing the media, Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh said a special investigation team has been constituted to examine the case in detail. He dismissed allegations made by the victim’s brother, Michael, that the assault was driven by racial hatred.
According to the police, one of the arrested accused is from Manipur. Officials added that preliminary findings do not indicate deliberate racial targeting of the victim.
What Police Claim Happened
Investigators stated that during questioning, the accused told them that certain remarks heard at the scene were exchanged within their own group and were not meant for the two brothers. Police said these comments were allegedly misunderstood, which led to an argument.
“During the interrogation, various pieces of information were gathered. It came to light that one of the accused, who is a resident of Manipur, stated that he was hosting a small party with his friends. During the gathering, some comments were exchanged jokingly among themselves. These remarks were perceived in a certain way, and the victim’s side tried to intervene and asked them not to continue,” said the SSP.
Birthday Party, Alcohol And Altercation
Police said the incident followed a birthday gathering hosted by one of the accused. The group had allegedly consumed alcohol before reaching the area. Due to intoxication, a verbal argument reportedly broke out between the group and the two brothers, which later escalated into violence.
“However, in the heat of the moment, an argument broke out, which escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in injuries that led to death. So far, the police investigation has not found any evidence of intentional racial comments. The remarks were made as jokes, but they were taken negatively by the victim’s side,” he stated.
