Watch: Glenn Phillips takes one-handed stunner to dismiss Shubman Gill in Champions Trophy final

India vice-captain Shubman Gill departed for 31 off 50 balls in the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand as Glenn Phillips took a stunning flying catch during the 19th over.

Mitchell Santner provided his side a much needed breakthrough as Phillips produced a moment of brilliance in the field to get India 106 for 1 after 19 overs.

Mitchell Santner tempted Gill with a looping delivery outside off-stump. The right-hander responded with a powerful, airborne drive. The ball was traveling fast and high over Phillips, but the Kiwi leaped into the air, leaned back at a sharp angle, and snatched it out of thin air.

Adding more trouble, Michael Bracewell took Virat Kohli’s wicket in the very next over. Kohli was trapped LBW by the Kiwi all-rounder. He took a review but it showed all three reds and Kohli had to walk back. India were left at 108 for 2 in 20 overs.

In the previous game in which India and New Zealand met, Phillips, a livewire in the field, pulled off a breathtaking catch at point, leaving Kohli in disbelief. After completing the catch, Phillips rised up to his feet with a huge smile on his face. The Indian fans were shocked and stunned in silence, struggling to understand what just happened in front of them. Kohli’s reaction said it all-pure disbelief. Replays confirmed Phillips’ brilliance, capturing the moment he soared through the air to complete an astonishing grab.

Phillips’ fielding exemplifies New Zealand’s outstanding performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Leading up to this innings, they had missed only four catches throughout the tournament. In contrast, India struggled in the field, increasing their total dropped catches to 11 after spilling four chances in the first innings of the final.
