ZIM vs NZ: Brendan Taylor added to Zimbabwe squad for 2nd Test after ban ends

ZIM vs NZ:Brendan Taylor has been officially added to Zimbabwe’s squad for the second Test against NewZealand following the end of his three-and-a-half-year ICC suspension on July25,2025. Captain Craig Ervine confirmed Taylor’s return, commending his commitment and the intense preparation he underwent over the past eight to twelve months – even without access to national training facilities during his ban.
Now 39, Taylor last represented Zimbabwe in September 2021. His exit came amid personal challenges, including a failed match-fixing approach and substance use, both of which led to his suspension.
“I certainly did think it was all done, but here I am – and it’s an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. I have to pinch myself a little to realise that I’m actually here. I’ve been soaking it all up and embracing every moment. It’s just been a really nice integration,” Taylor said in a statement.
“The last year and a half has certainly been dedicated to my return. I’ve put in an immense amount of work – from fitness to the technical side to diet – and I’m feeling a lot leaner, fitter and mentally stronger. That’s only been possible through sobriety. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this journey on my own, just rebuilding the blocks, and I feel in a wonderful space,” Taylor added.
Over his Test career, Taylor has featured in 34 matches, averaging 36.25 and scoring six centuries, including a memorable unbeaten 105 against Bangladesh in 2011.
His return brings a wealth of experience and leadership back into the side as Zimbabwe prepares for a busy Test schedule and looks ahead to co-hosting the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The second Test begins on August 7 in Bulawayo at Queen’s Sports Club.
