A Year-Long Reign of Fear: Horror Films Created a Stir Throughout 2025

From psychological thrillers to folklore-based scares, horror ruled both theatres and OTT platforms this year

New Delhi:
The year 2025 turned out to be a memorable one for horror film lovers. Several powerful horror movies were released this year, with fresh storylines and the return of popular franchises sending chills down audiences’ spines. From psychological thrillers to supernatural tales and folklore-based narratives, the horror genre maintained its dominance throughout the year.

Horror films made a strong impact both at the box office and on OTT platforms. Spine-chilling scenes left viewers terrified, while several films became major talking points. South Indian cinema, in particular, stood out with stories rooted in local folklore, traditions, and rituals that deeply resonated with audiences. Overall, 2025 proved to be a standout year for the horror genre, as both new titles and established franchises successfully delivered fear and suspense.

Horror Films That Defined 2025

The year began on a chilling note with the release of Chhorii 2 on Amazon Prime Video on April 11, 2025. Starring Nushrratt Bharuccha and Soha Ali Khan, the sequel retained the eerie supernatural elements and psychological fear of its predecessor. The story of a mother fighting terrifying forces to protect her daughter struck a chord with viewers and was widely appreciated for blending horror with a strong social message.

On May 1, The Bhootni arrived in theatres. Starring Sanjay Dutt, Mouni Roy, Sunny Singh, and Palak Tiwari, this horror-comedy revolved around a female spirit inhabiting a “virgin tree” on a college campus. The film balanced scares with humour, offering light-hearted entertainment, though some viewers felt it leaned more towards comedy than pure horror.

Kajol’s Maa, released on June 27, brought a mythological horror experience to the big screen. The film featured Kajol as a mother who takes on the form of Goddess Kali to save her daughter. Rooted in village folklore, demonic curses, and maternal strength, the film blended motherhood with the supernatural. Kajol’s performance received strong praise.

On Halloween, October 31, the Malayalam horror thriller Dice Ira hit theatres. Directed by Rahul Sadasivan and starring Pranav Mohanlal, the film followed an affluent architect whose life is disrupted by terrifying supernatural events. The gripping narrative kept audiences hooked, and after its OTT release on Jio Hotstar on December 5, it went on to become one of the most successful horror films of the year.

Netflix released Baramulla on November 7. Starring Manav Kaul and Bhasha Sumbli, this supernatural thriller was set against the backdrop of children mysteriously disappearing in Baramulla, Kashmir. The investigation uncovers dark secrets hidden within a police officer’s home, while emotionally charged elements inspired by the Kashmiri Pandit experience added depth. Its unique storyline and haunting visuals made it one of the most talked-about horror releases of 2025.

Apart from these, films like Thama also left a strong impression. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, the movie presented horror with a lighter touch, blending eerie moments with mainstream entertainment.

🔮 In conclusion, 2025 belonged to horror cinema—where fear, folklore, psychology, and powerful performances came together to keep audiences scared, engaged, and thoroughly entertained all year long.
