EU Designates Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a Terrorist Organization
Decision follows deadly crackdown on nationwide protests; senior Iranian officials also sanctioned

The European Union has officially designated Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, following what it described as a brutal and bloody crackdown on protests across Iran.
The announcement was made on Thursday, January 29, by the EU’s top diplomat in a post on X.
EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas said that the bloc’s foreign ministers unanimously agreed on the designation. Condemning Tehran’s actions, she stated, “Any government that kills thousands of its own people is heading toward its own destruction.”
The listing comes shortly after the 27-member EU imposed sanctions on 15 Iranian officials, including senior commanders of the Revolutionary Guard, for their role in violent repression of protesters.
According to activists, the crackdown on demonstrations has resulted in the deaths of more than 6,300 people across the country.
The move marks a significant escalation in the EU’s stance toward Iran and is expected to further strain diplomatic relations between Brussels and Tehran, particularly over human rights and internal security issues.
