Iran Closes Airspace, Disrupting International Flights; Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet Issue Travel Advisories

Tensions Rise Amid Protests as Airlines Reroute or Cancel Flights Passing Over Iran

New Delhi: Iran has closed its airspace amid escalating unrest, affecting international flights, including those from India. Leading Indian carriers—Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet—issued travel advisories on Thursday, warning passengers of potential delays, route changes, and cancellations.

The closure comes at a time of intensifying protests against Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and growing tensions with the United States. Air India informed on social media platform X that flights passing over Iran could face delays or cancellations. To ensure passenger safety, several flights are being rerouted, which may increase travel time. Flights that cannot be rerouted have been temporarily canceled. Passengers are advised to check flight status before leaving for the airport, as the airline prioritizes the safety of travelers and staff.

IndiGo confirmed that some international flights were affected by the sudden closure. The airline said its teams are monitoring the situation and assisting affected passengers with alternative options, including rebooking or refunds.

SpiceJet also reported flight disruptions and advised passengers to check the airline website or 24-hour helpline for updated flight information.

The closure was announced early Thursday morning without a stated reason, amid nationwide protests that have turned violent and heightened the risk of US intervention. According to Safe Airspace, a flight safety monitoring platform, many airlines have already reduced or suspended flights over Iranian airspace. Most planes are now taking routes avoiding Iranian airspace due to potential safety threats, including accidental targeting in conflict zones.

Iran has been experiencing large-scale protests for several weeks, initially triggered by rising prices and poor economic conditions but now directly opposing the government. Reports suggest this is the largest challenge to the Iranian government since 1979, with millions participating. Government crackdowns have resulted in over 500 deaths and more than 10,000 arrests.

Former US President Donald Trump publicly supported the protesters and warned that continued violence by Iran could provoke a strong US response. In a recent TV interview, he stated that any continued shootings of civilians could trigger decisive US action.

This ongoing unrest has turned Iran into a high-risk zone for aviation, prompting airlines worldwide to reroute flights and issue urgent advisories to ensure passenger safety.
