Kerala Student Ragging Case: NHRC Takes Suo Moto Cognisance, Seeks Report From State Govt Within 10 Days

Kerala Ragging Case: In the Kerala student ragging case, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance and requested a report from the state government within ten days.
The complainant, a first-year student, was shown in a video of the event that went viral on Thursday, tied to a cot at the government nursing college in Kottayam with his wrists and legs bound.
He was stabbed by seniors using a compass from a geometry set in the video. He heard the attackers laughing as the victim screamed in agony. Lotion was also poured into his mouth by them.
Additionally, the accused put a dumbbell on the victim’s genitals. One of the tormentors may be seen pulling at each nipple while a cloth clip is hanging from them in the video.
Police are looking into who took the video, how it was released to the public, and the incident itself.
Investigators said they are currently looking into whether more victims experienced the same kind of abuse. On the day of the complaint, five students were detained.
They are Samuel Johnson (20), Rahul Raj (22), Jeeva (18), Rijil Jith (20), and Vivek (21). One of the allegations includes claims that the seniors extorted money from juniors every Sunday to buy alcohol, with those who refused being subjected to physical abuse.
Meanwhile, the police said that they were searching whether there were more victims in connection with the ragging incident. “The case has been registered based on a complaint from one student but we will record statements from others to determine if there are more victims,” Kottayam District Police Chief Shahul Hameed was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
