The Maharashtra government has announced a local holiday on Friday to mark the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar, commonly known as ‘Mahaparinirvan Diwas’.

Observed annually on December 6, the day pays tribute to Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, affectionately called Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.

Each year, thousands of people travel from across Maharashtra to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar’s Shivaji Park, Mumbai, where Ambedkar was cremated, to pay their respects. In preparation for the increased passenger traffic, the Railways are running special services.

Ambedkar, a key member of the seven-person committee that drafted the Indian Constitution, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1990. He passed away on December 6, 1956 in Delhi.

Special Train Services

The Central Railway has scheduled 14 special trains for Mahaparinirvan Diwas. These trains will arrive at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on December 6, originating from locations including Aurangabad, Nagpur, Adilabad, and Sholapur.

Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railway, stated: “As in previous years, 14 additional special trains will run for Mahaparinirvan Diwas, along with 12 extra suburban services on December 5 and 6 to manage the increased passenger flow.”

Enhanced security measures include the deployment of approximately 300 additional Railway Police Force (RPF) personnel and ‘May I Help You’ booths at key stations.

Large crowds are expected at Chaityabhoomi in Shivaji Park, Mumbai. To manage the influx, traffic restrictions will be in place in central Mumbai from December 5 to 7.
