Mahindra Thar Roxx wins the Indian Car of the Year 2025

Mahindra has made history by winning the Indian Car of the Year 2025 award for the Thar Roxx by the closest margin ever in the award’s 20-year history.

The SUV beat the runner-up, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire for the award by a 2-point difference with the Maruti Suzuki Swift settling for the second runner-up award. Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Managing Director of JK Tyre, presented the award to Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, auto division, Mahindra and Mahindra and Pratap Bose, Executive Vice President and Chief Design Officer, Mahindra & Mahindra. Since the inception of ICOTY and IMOTY, JK Tyre has been actively involved in the event. To ensure a transparent winner selection and evaluation process, Deloitte served as the knowledge partner.

The Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) Jury comprises respected automotive journalists from various magazines, publications, and other media houses, including the Auto Today magazine. The 2024 ICOTY Jury had 21 journalists including Yogendra Pratap, Editor, Auto Today, and Dipayan Dutta, Assistant Editor, Auto Today.

Each jury member evaluates these cars and is allocated a total of 25 points to distribute. No single car can receive more than 10 points from any jury member. The 25 points must be divided among five contenders, with one standout winner, ensuring transparency in the process and minimizing the likelihood of any single jury member unduly influencing the outcome.

Mahindra Thar Roxx is the Indian Car of the Year 2025The Mahindra Thar Roxx was introduced in August 2024 and serves as the 5-door version of the pre-existing Thar SUV and has received a positive response from Indian car buyers. The Mahindra Thar Roxx scored a total of 139 points while the runner-up Maruti Suzuki Dzire’s total tally stood at 137 and the Maruti Suzuki Swift scored 83 points. Other cars that competed for the coveted award were the MG Windsor, Tata Curvv / Tata Curvv.ev, Tata Punch.ev, BYD eMAX 7,⁠⁠and the Citroen Basalt.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is available at a starting price of ₹12.99 lakh (ex-showroom) while the top model is priced at Rs 22.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes with two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol delivering 160bhp and 330Nm of torque, and a 2.0-litre diesel producing 150bhp and 330 Nm, both paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
