Pink Eye Infection Returns in Bengaluru, Raising Concerns Among Parents and Doctors

After a brief lull, the pink eye infection or conjunctivitis , commonly known as Madras Eye, is once again spreading across Karnataka, particularly in Bengaluru.

Following the recent spike in dengue cases, residents of the Silicon City are now grappling with this highly contagious eye infection, which is affecting children the most.

According to health experts, the sharp rise in pink eye cases is linked to the fluctuating weather conditions. “This year, we’ve seen a 15 percent increase in cases compared to the previous year,” said Dr. Suresh Babu, Medical Superintendent and Eye Specialist at Minto Eye Hospital.

What is Pink Eye?

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is an infection that causes inflammation of the conjunctiva – the transparent membrane lining the eyelids and eyeballs. Infected blood vessels become swollen, turning the white part of the eye red or pink. This viral infection spreads rapidly from person to person, particularly in crowded environments like schools.

  • Redness and itching in the eyes
  • Excessive tearing
  • A burning or stinging sensation in the eyes

Dr. Babu pointed out that while pink eye used to be more common during the rainy season, it is now being reported throughout the year. “There were 4-5 cases in December and about 7-10 cases in January. The numbers are rising again,” he added.

Parents on Alert

With children being the most affected demographic, many parents are becoming increasingly hesitant to send their kids to school. The ease with which the infection spreads in closed environments is a major concern for families and schools alike.

Doctor-Recommended Precautions

To manage and prevent the spread of pink eye, doctors suggest the following measures:

  • Use ibuprofen or over-the-counter eye pain relievers
  • Apply lubricating eye drops to ease irritation
  • Place a warm, damp cloth over closed eyes several times a day
  • Use a fresh, clean cloth for each eye to prevent cross-infection
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes and refrain from wearing contact lenses until the infection clears
  • Maintain strict hand hygiene and avoid sharing towels or bedding
  • Infected individuals should avoid swimming pools to prevent community spread

Health authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take early action if symptoms arise. With timely care and preventive steps, the spread of this contagious infection can be curtailed.
