US NSA Jake Sullivan To Visit India Tomorrow; Chinese Dams, Indo-Pacific Stability On Agenda
Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, will visit India on January 5 and 6 for crucial discussions with his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, and other senior officials. The talks will cover a broad spectrum of bilateral, regional, and global issues, as announced by the White House on Friday.
US NSA :Sullivan is also set to meet with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during this trip, which marks the final high-profile visit to India by a member of the Biden administration before its end. The two leaders had previously met in Washington, DC, last month.
Sullivan’s upcoming visit is expected to focus on discussions with Indian officials regarding the impact of Chinese dams, news agency Reuters reported citing a senior US official. Washington, along with its Western allies, has consistently seen India as a strategic counterbalance to China’s growing influence in Asia and beyond.
“We have certainly seen in many places in the Indo-Pacific that upstream dams that the Chinese have created, including in the Mekong region, can have potentially damaging environmental but also climate impacts on downstream countries,” an unnamed official told Reuters.
US NSA :The Indian government has expressed its concerns to Beijing regarding China’s plan to construct a massive hydropower dam in Tibet on the Yarlung Zangbo River, which flows into India. In response, Chinese officials have assured that the hydropower projects in Tibet will not significantly affect the environment or the water supplies downstream.
The dam, which is set to be the world’s largest with an estimated annual capacity of 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, received approval last month.
The agenda will also include discussions on broader cooperation, covering areas such as civilian nuclear technology, artificial intelligence, space exploration, and military licensing. Economic concerns, including China’s overcapacity, will be addressed as well.
US NSA :Additionally, the dialogue will focus on the stability of the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and security in this strategically significant area.Russia vows strong response after Ukraine’s ATACMS attack in Belgorod
