Disabled workers find it challenging to work from home at Amazon.

With Amazon pushing for a complete return to the office five days a week beginning in January, the corporation is tightening its regulations for disabled workers who choose to work from home.Disabled workers now have to go through more difficult procedures to obtain permission to work remotely.

Their requests must pass a thorough review process that involves several managers approving them. To determine whether in-person accommodations are effective for them, they may even need to return to the office for a month in certain situations.

According to the Bloomberg story, many employees are unhappy with the new policy because they believe it creates needless obstacles, particularly since some have been effectively working from home for years. According to Amazon, the adjustments are a part of their larger plan to improve company culture and encourage employees to return to the workplace. Andy Jassy, the CEO, thinks that face-to-face meetings improve teamwork and prevent the bureaucracy that has developed during the pandemic.

“We understand that this is going to be a transition and we’re working with our employees to make it as easy as possible,” Amazon spokesperson Margaret Callahan said in a statement. “We continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant. When in-person accommodations are needed, we’ll provide them, and in some cases, offer an exception to working from the office.” She declined to say how many requests have been approved.

This is how it operates: Disabled workers speak with “accommodation consultants” who go over their medical records and previous work arrangements. The consultants assess the effectiveness of working remotely and whether the workplace can accommodate their needs. Multiple managers need to authorize remote work as well.

Although Amazon claims to be dedicated to helping its employees, some believe the procedure is overly onerous and may drive some employees to resign. How many requests have been granted under the more stringent guidelines has not been disclosed by the corporation.

Under US law, employers must offer “reasonable accommodations” to disabled employees, like reserved parking or special equipment. But remote work isn’t guaranteed, giving Amazon room to ask people to come back.

For now, many employees are waiting to see how these new rules play out. With January just around the corner, some worry the changes could make it harder to balance their health and their jobs.
