HMPV In India: Assam Logs This Year’s 1st HMPV Case; Doctors Call It ‘Common Virus’; India Tally Goes Up To 14

A 10-year-old month child has been infected with the HMPV virus in Assam, making it the first case in the state and the 14th case across the nation.The child undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh is stable, according to AMCH Superintendent Dr Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan.

“The HMPV infection was confirmed yesterday after we got test results from Lahowal-based ICMR-RMRC,” said the hospital superintendent. He further also informed that samples are sent to the Indian Council of Medical Research for tests in influenza and flu-related cases as a routine practice.”It was a routine test during which the HMPV infection was detected. The child is stable now. It is a common virus and there is nothing to worry about,” he said.

HMPV In India: ICMR- Regional Medical Research Centre, NE, Lahowal (Dibrugarh) Senior Scientist Dr Biswajit Borkakoty informed that a total of 110 cases of HMPV virus has been detected in the state since 2014, adding that this is the first case of this season.”Every year it is detected, and nothing is new. We have got the sample from AMCH and this has been found positive for HMPV,” he said.

Human metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus that can infect individuals of all ages, especially during the winter and early spring seasons.The viral infection is typically mild and self-resolving, with most patients recovering without the need for medical intervention.

On Friday, Gujarat also reported the first case of HMPV virus since 2001, informed Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel. He emphasised that it remains one of several viruses affecting the respiratory system and announced that the Gujarat government has issued an advisory in response on Friday.

Speaking to the media persons, Patel said, “HMPV virus was found in 2001 and is still found today. It is one of the many viruses that are found in the respiratory system.
