Brazil, Mexico and Spain Back Cuba Amid Trump’s Threats, Call for Diplomatic Resolution

Barcelona: In a coordinated diplomatic move, Mexico, Spain, and Brazil on Sunday issued a joint statement expressing concern over the “dramatic situation” in Cuba. The development comes as the island nation faces mounting pressure and repeated threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The three countries—currently led by left-leaning governments—voiced “deep concern over the serious humanitarian crisis facing the Cuban people.” In their joint declaration, they urged the international community and relevant stakeholders to take necessary steps to ease the situation.

The statement was issued during a summit of leftist leaders held in Barcelona, hosted by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The meeting was attended by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who collectively called for cooperation to “defend democracy.”

While the statement did not explicitly name the United States, the leaders emphasized the importance of dialogue conducted with “good faith and respect” in line with international law. They stressed that diplomatic engagement should aim to find a sustainable resolution to the crisis.

The countries also underlined the importance of national sovereignty, asserting that any solution must ensure that “the people of Cuba can freely determine their own future.”

This diplomatic push comes against the backdrop of repeated remarks by Trump suggesting that Cuba could be “next” on his agenda. His comments followed developments involving Venezuela and Iran.

Earlier this week, speaking to the press, Trump claimed he had the capability to “take control of Cuba in one form or another” and said he could “do anything” with the island nation. Reiterating his stance when pressed for clarification, he said, “Taking control of Cuba in some form, yes,” adding that he could either “liberate it or take it over.”

The remarks have intensified global concern and prompted calls for restraint and diplomatic dialogue to prevent further escalation.
