From Junglemahal Tribal Leader to Cabinet Minister: Who is Khudiram Tudu in Bengal’s First BJP Government?

New Delhi: For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party has formed a government in West Bengal, with Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as the Chief Minister of the state.
Along with Suvendu Adhikari, five other leaders were also sworn in as ministers during the grand oath-taking ceremony.
Among them, Khudiram Tudu has emerged as a prominent tribal face in Suvendu Adhikari’s cabinet.
Who is Khudiram Tudu?
Khudiram Tudu is a leader who rose from the forests of Junglemahal to the mainstream of West Bengal politics. Once again, the Bharatiya Janata Party has given a ministerial position to a relatively lesser-known leader instead of a widely discussed political figure.
During the oath-taking ceremony held in Kolkata, Khudiram Tudu took oath as minister after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, alongside senior BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, and young BJP leader Nisith Pramanik.
In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Khudiram Tudu won the Ranibandh seat in Bankura district by a margin of more than 52,000 votes, earning a place in the front ranks of the BJP-led West Bengal government.
According to his election affidavit, Khudiram Tudu is a graduate and owns assets worth nearly Rs 23 lakh. No criminal cases have been registered against him.
BJP Strengthens Tribal Outreach
Khudiram Tudu defeated the Trinamool Congress candidate in one of Bengal’s key tribal constituencies. His victory is being seen as part of BJP’s strong performance in the Junglemahal region, where the party managed to build deep support among tribal voters during the 2026 Assembly elections.
Tudu represents the Ranibandh constituency, a Scheduled Tribe-reserved seat in the tribal-dominated Bankura region, which has long remained politically significant in West Bengal elections.
By inducting Khudiram Tudu into the state cabinet, the BJP appears to be strengthening its outreach to the tribal community in West Bengal.
Political Significance of Tudu’s Inclusion
Khudiram Tudu’s presence in the Bengal cabinet highlights the growing political importance of tribal representation in the state. This becomes even more significant after BJP’s aggressive campaign in the Junglemahal region, which focused heavily on welfare schemes, tribal identity, and allegations of neglect under the previous Trinamool Congress government.
