Delhi Finance Minister Chairs Pre-Budget Consultation Meeting for Union Budget 2026-27

New Delhi [India]: Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired a pre-budget consultation meeting on Saturday in New Delhi with states and union territories (with legislatures) ahead of the Union Budget 2026-27.

The meeting was attended by Union Finance Minister of State Pankaj Chaudhary, governors of Manipur; Chief Ministers of Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Meghalaya, and Sikkim; Deputy Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Telangana; finance ministers of states and union territories; along with secretaries of the Departments of Economic Affairs, Expenditure, and Revenue, and senior officials from the Finance Ministry.


Goa’s Key Demands

After the meeting, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told reporters:

  • Goa requested continuation of ongoing central schemes, especially to support its tourism sector.

  • Additional funding was sought for the health sector and infrastructure development in Kushavati, recently created as a new district.

  • Specific demands were made for renewable energy projects and redevelopment of Konkan Railway.

He highlighted the 15th Finance Commission’s recommendation of ₹700 crore for Goa under state-specific funds, including ₹500 crore for climate change initiatives and ₹200 crore for tourism. Sawant also requested additional allocations under the 16th Finance Commission.


Broader Pre-Budget Consultations

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a pre-budget meeting with eminent economists. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, NITI Aayog Vice-Chairperson Suman Bery, and other leading economists were present. Discussions focused on key priorities and inputs for the upcoming Union Budget 2026-27.

Over ten rounds of pre-budget consultations, the Finance Ministry engaged with representatives from:

  • Agriculture and farmer associations

  • MSMEs and capital markets

  • Manufacturing, services, and technology sectors

  • Tourism and hospitality industries

  • Trade unions and labor organizations

These sessions aimed to gather sector-specific insights and recommendations to shape the fiscal priorities of the upcoming budget.
