Irfan Pathan: “Dhoni Led for Years, Now It’s Time for the Youngsters”

New Delhi: Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that the next generation of players in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a priceless opportunity to learn from and be guided by the experience of veteran wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni.
With the 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) fast approaching, Dhoni’s continued presence in the CSK squad has been a hot topic. Pathan pointed out that while the franchise is clearly moving toward a team built around young talent, the former captain’s influence in the dressing room could prove invaluable in mentoring the next generation of leaders.
Praising Dhoni’s preparation and fitness ahead of the season, Pathan said the veteran appears ready to contribute both on and off the field once again.
“As IPL time comes around, we see Mahendra Singh Dhoni back in action, which means he is fully prepared and looking quite fit,” he told JioStar.
One of IPL’s most successful franchises, CSK has gradually begun reshaping its team while maintaining its traditional emphasis on experienced leadership. Players like Ruturaj Gaikwad are stepping into leadership roles, while emerging talents such as Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube are expected to take on key responsibilities. This approach balances continuity with gradual transition.
“We’ve seen Dhoni take responsibility for many years, but I think it’s time to pass that on to players like Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who are also young leaders. CSK’s mindset has shifted. For these youngsters, learning from Dhoni’s experience and having him guide them forward is extremely important,” Pathan said.
“On paper, it’s a very exciting team. In terms of hitting sixes and showing intent, I’m really looking forward to seeing the fearlessness of this young CSK squad.”
Focusing on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Pathan also shared insights on franchise-related challenges, particularly regarding the availability of fast-bowling resources ahead of the season. The former pacer noted that team balance and injury concerns could impact selection decisions, especially for overseas players and the wicketkeeper position.
“Choosing between Seifert and Finn Allen will be a nice dilemma, but post-auction, KKR’s biggest challenge will be the availability of their fast bowlers. They’ll be concerned about Pathirana’s injury. Harshit Rana’s absence is also a big blow. However, considering the schedule, KKR may get some relief as they play three of their first four matches at home.
“This allows for better planning and adaptation to Eden Gardens’ pitch—not just for players, but for the coaching staff as well. As for Seifert and Finn Allen, if overseas fast-bowler availability is an issue, the wicketkeeper position can be managed by Abhishek Nair and his team for now.”
KKR’s home ground, Eden Gardens, has historically provided a strategic advantage, and Pathan believes the schedule could help the franchise manage team concerns more effectively in the early stages of the tournament.
